Tuesday was a beautiful sunny day, but the weatherman promises some bad weather is on the way. President Carter asked Con gress Monday to approve a record $616 billion budget that aims most new spending at energy and defense programs. It represents a $52 billion increase over this year’s federal spending. Sen. Edward M. Kennedy, seeking to rejuvenate his presidential campaign, blames President Carter for the Iranian crisis Monday and said restoring draft registration is a “Step across the threshold of Cold War II.” Industrial Bank of Japan, Ltd., a major financial institution, agreed Monday to head a syndicate to finance construction of a Walt Disney amusement park on the outskirts of Tokyo. A 180-foot Coast Guard cutter with 53 people on board collided with an oil tanker Monday night near Tampa, Fla. and sank. C. 28782 Best Performance Ever By Landrum Team The Fifth Landrum High School Gymnastic Invitational was held last Saturday in the LHS Gymnasium. Six teams compet ed for individual and team honors in three divisions. In Class II team competition Airport was first. Northwestern second and Landrum third. In Class II team competition Northwestern finish ed first followed by Airport and Columbia, respectively. Lan drum High School won first place in Optional competition followed by Northwestern High School. This was the first Invitational where all team awards were won by separate teams. The individual honors won by LHS gymnasts demonstrated the finest performance in the history of the Invitational. Judy Green Hefner took first place in all ten of her individual competitive catagories. Mickie Doar earned two firsts, four seconds, one third, and two second place finishes in all-around competi tion. Nancy Smith won two seconds, two thirds, one fourth and one fifth place, and a third all-around finish in optionals. Tracey West won two thirds, a fifth place finish, and a fourth all-around finish in optionals. The all-around finishes by Hefner, Doar, Smith and West were the best performances ever by a Landrum High gymnastic team in the LHS Invitational. The Continued On Back Page WEDNESDAY, JAN. 30, 1980 For School Board Phyllis Horne Crain Phyllis Horne Crain (Mrs. Keith) has filed for the Polk County School Board from Green Creek Township. Mrs. Crain is a graduate of Polk Central High School, North Greenville Junior College where she was Salutatorian in 1977 and from Wofford College in 1979 where she was magna cum laude. She is a sixth grade teacher at 0. P. Earle in Landrum. Her husband, Keith Crain, is a teacher and coach at Polk Central High School. They have one daughter, Holly, age 4. Mrs. Crain is a member of the Mill Creek Church of the Brethren where she is a Sunday School teacher and church pianist. She stated that she was interested in education as a mother and as an educator and could contribute to better education in Polk County. Price 10c Per Copy Early Settlers Of Polk County The February meeting of the Polk County Historical Associa tion will be held on Tuesday, F ebruary 5th at 2:30 p.m. at the Polk County Library in Colum bus. “Early Settlers of Polk County” will be the topic of the program presented by Blanche Culbreth (Mrs. Hubert) of Stotts Corner, Polk County. As a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, and United Daughters of the Confed eracy, her roots go back to early North Carolina settlers. Because of her interest in research, she is an active member of the Geneological Society of Old Tryon County which existed from 1768 to 1779, and included all the territory west of Mecklenburg County and south of Rowan County. Were the early settlers Loyal ists or Patriots? Where did they come from? What attracted them to this area? These and other questions will be answered at the meeting. The public is invited. Rotarians To Learn About Polk Library The Tryon Rotary Club will meet Friday at 12:45 p.m. at the Pacolet River Plantation.
